Former sports medicine physician sentenced for sexual abuse & healthcare fraud: 4 notes

Former sports medicine physician Howard Orson Setzer, MD, was sentenced to 30 days in jail and five years of probation for sexually abusing patients as well as fraudulently billing insurance companies and Medicaid, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

Here are four things to know:

1. Dr. Setzer was charged with more than two dozen felony and misdemeanor counts, including sodomy, assault, abuse of a Medicaid patient as well as Medicaid and insurance fraud. His insurance fraud totaled nearly $5,900.

2. Dr. Setzer allegedly victimized 11 women at St. Louis-based Mid County Orthopaedic Surgery & Sports Medicine, according to a July 2017 indictment filed in St. Charles County (Mo.).

3. In January, he pleaded guilty to 10 counts of fraud and abuse; prosecutors dismissed the remaining charges in exchange for his guilty pleas and agreement to surrender his medical license.

4. Dr. Setzer has pending sex abuse, assault and sodomy charges in St. Louis County as well. No trial dates have been set.
