Dr. Asif Ilyas performs hand surgery on Robert Covington: 3 insights

Board-certified orthopedic surgeon Asif Ilyas, MD, successfully performed surgery to repair the extensor tendon in Philadelphia 76ers forward Robert Covington's left middle finger.

Here are three things to know.

1. Dr. Ilyas is a hand surgeon at the Rothman Institute in Philadelphia and a professor of orthopedic surgery at Philadelphia-based Thomas Jefferson University.

2. Mr. Covington suffered the tendon injury Dec. 28, 2017 in Portland.

3. Mr. Covington is allowed to use his hand immediately after surgery and will wear a splint while recovering. He will be reevaluated in two to three weeks to assess his readiness to resume basketball.
