New York Giants former head team physician Allan Levy, MD, 90, passed away April 8, according to New York Daily News.
Dr. Levy was a pioneer in sports medicine, spending 30-plus years as the head team physician for the Giants. He began his career in the U.S. Navy as a medic during World War II.
After earning his medical degree from Weill Cornell Medicine in New York City, Dr. Levy went on to serve his Westwood, N.J., community as a family physician and internist. He practiced out of his basement and routinely volunteered as the local high school's onsite physician for football games.
It was during those football games, Dr. Levy found his passion for sports medicine. He went on the serve as chief of sports medicine at Pascack Valley Hospital in Westwood.
Dr. Levy also dedicated his time supporting the Living Heart Foundation, an organization that helps former football players find the medical care they need to live healthy lives beyond the sport. He will be remembered by friends and family for his "docisms," one being "Surgery is the failure of all treatment options to work."
