Do females and males respond the same to concussions? 4 takeaways

Orthopedic Sports Medicine

Los Angeles-based UCLA researchers analyzed how athletes respond to concussions based on gender, according to ConsumerAffairs.

Here are four takeaways:

1. Researchers found females are at a greater risk of experiencing hormonal issues following concussions.

2. Females also have muscles in their necks that respond differently following collisions compared to males' neck muscles.

3. Additionally, females are more likely to reveal symptoms related to concussions, like headaches or depression.

4. Mayumi Prins, PhD, UCLA Brain Injury Research Center education program director, noted most females will recover from concussions. However, concussion symptoms may negatively impact their development over a long time period.
