NFL asks Players Association to collaboratively research marijuana use for pain management — 4 key points

Orthopedic Sports Medicine

The NFL's CMO Allen Sills, MD, is advocating for research on players using marijuana to manage pain, according to The Washington Post.

Here are four key points:

1. The NFL's current policy states players can not use marijuana for pain management. If breaching the policy, players could face suspension.

2. Dr. Sills, a Nashville, Tenn.-based Vanderbilt University neurosurgeon, told The Post it is "really important" to explore whether marijuana could serve as a safe treatment method for players' pain.

3. He believes the NFL and NFL Players Association should collaborate to analyze cannabinoid compounds more closely for treating acute and chronic pain.

4. In July, the NFL drafted a letter to the NFL Players Association, asking to collaborate on this research. The association has already been researching this topic and has not yet responded to the NFL.
