Dr. Martin O'Malley performs ankle surgery on Yankees' Greg Bird: 4 things to know

Yankees' first baseman Greg Bird underwent right ankle surgery performed by Martin O'Malley, according to mlb.com.

Here are four things to know:

 

1. Mr. Bird underwent surgery to address the os trigonum in his ankle.

 

2. Dr. O'Malley performed the surgery at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City.

 

3. Mr. Bird has been out since the beginning of the 2017 season due to the injury, but hopes to return by September.

 

4. Specializing in foot and ankle reconstructive surgery, Dr. O'Malley is a fellowship director at the Hospital for Special Surgery.
