7 key statistics on sports injuries

Here are seven key statistics on sports injuries in children, according to Baltimore-based Johns Hopkins Medicine.

1. More than 3.5 million children ages 14 and younger get hurt annually while playing sports.

 

2. Sports and recreational activities cause 21 percent of all traumatic brain injuries among children.

 

3. Almost 50 percent of head injuries occur during bicycling, skateboarding or skating incidents.

 

4. Sixty-two percent of injuries occurred during practice.

 

5. More than 775,000 children are treated for sports-related injuries in hospital emergency rooms each year.

 

6. Nearly 215,000 children ages five to 14 were treated in hospital emergency rooms for football related injuries, the highest volume of any sports-related injurty

 

7. Baseball has the highest fatality rate among sports for children ages five to 14, with three to four children dying from baseball injuries each year.
