NFL names Dr. Allen Sills chief medical officer — 5 key takeways

Allen K. Sills, MD, of Nashville-based Vanderbilt University Medical Center was appointed chief medical officer of the NFL by league commissioner Roger Goodell.

Here's what you need to know:

 

 1. Dr. Sills co-founded and co-directs the Vanderbilt Sports Concussion Center and is professor of neurological surgery, orthopedic surgery and rehabilitation.

 

2. Team physicians, medical and scientific experts, the NFL Players' Association and NFL advisors will all work closely with Dr. Sills to advance football's health and safety.

 

3. The search was conducted by a panel consisting of a number of prominent physicians including Boston-based Brigham and Women's Hospital President Elizabeth G. Nable, MD, and NFL Physicians Society President Robert A. Heyer, MD, of Charlotte, N.C.-based Carolinas HealthCare System.

 

4. Dr. Sills has previously provided in-game care for NFL players as an unaffiliated neurotrauma consultant and has served as a consulting neurosurgeon to the Memphis Grizzlies, Nashville Predators, U.S. Equestrian Foundation and several other collegiate and professional athletic teams.

 

5. Dr. Sills will report to NFL Executive Vice President of Health and Safety Initiatives Jeff Miller.
