The Minnesota Twins announced David Altchek, MD, will perform Tommy John surgery on Alex Kirilloff's left elbow next week, according to Infoforum.

Here are five things to know:

1. Mr. Kirilloff reported soreness in his throwing elbow on Aug. 28, 2016, after playing 55 minor league games.

2. Initial MRI exams convinced the team's medical staff that rest and rehab would enable the 19-year-old outfielder to avoid surgery. He underwent PRP therapy throughout the offseason but symptoms persisted upon his return to minor-league camp.

3. Mr. Kirilloff is expected to resume baseball activities in five months and return to full health in nine months. He is currently listed as the team's third top prospect.

4. The situation is unique, as non-pitchers undergo Tommy John surgery far less often than pitchers do, according to The Hardball Times.

5. Dr. Altchek is the New York Mets' team physician. He performed Tommy John surgery on Twins outfielder and designated hitter, Miguel Sanó in 2014, according to MLB.com.
