California groups seek to regulate athletic training profession — 4 notes

Orthopedic Sports Medicine

A number of California advocacy groups have promoted legislation to regulate and improve the athletic training profession, according to Physical Therapy Products.

Here are four things to know:

1. The groups include the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine, American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine and National Collegiate Athletic Association.

2. California is the only U.S. state that doesn't regulate athletic trainers by requiring licensure, meaning that athletic trainers in the state don't need to have the proper education and training in order to practice.

3. The NCAA and other groups said in the report, "An increasing number of states have made it illegal for an unregulated athletic trainer to practice for any period of time within the state," before pointing out that California-based athletic trainers expose themselves and others to risks by treating patients.

4. The California Athletic Trainers' Association hopes to work with Governor Jerry Brown to pass legislation that will regulate athletic trainers more appropriately.
