NBA, GE Healthcare call for next round of proposals on bone stress injuries; award 4 winners of last round's awards

The National Basketball Association and GE Healthcare Orthopedics and Sports Medicine Collaboration are seeking a new round of proposals focused on bone stress injuries.

The two organizations created the collaboration to boost understand of injury mechanics with the hope of reducing future injures. John DiFiori, MD, the NBA director of sports medicine, heads the collaboration's strategic advisory board. An NBA and GE Healthcare steering committee also oversees the collaboration.

 

Here are five things to know:

 

1. The collaboration wants proposals addressing the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of BSI.

 

2. This call for proposals focuses on the following research topics:

 

• Imaging advancements to enhance prevention, diagnosis and/or treatment of BSI
• BSI prevention and management

 

3. The collaboration will offer a total of up to $1.5 million for a three-year period for research addressing BSI prevention, diagnosis and treatment.

 

4. Researchers may submit proposals until April 17, 2017.

5. The collaboration also announced four winners for the last round of proposals, who submitted research proposals addressing acute myotendinous injuries.

 

University of Newcastle, Australia — Dr. Suzi Edwards: "The HAMI Study: Investigating Hamstring and Adductor Myotendinous Injury Risk Factors in Basketball"
Academic Medical Center, Amsterdam — Dr. Johannes Tol: "Game changing innovative sports research: The Basketball and Muscle Injury (BAMI) study."
• University of Wisconsin-Madison — Bryan Heiderscheit, PhD: Clinical, Biomechanical, and Novel Imaging Biomarkers of Hamstring Strain Injury Potential in Elite Athletes."
• Mayo Clinic — Timothy Hewett, PhD: "Comparative Effectiveness of Hamstring Muscle Strain Injury Prevention Programs"
