Martin O'Malley, MD, inserted a screw into the fifth metatarsal in Toronto Raptor's forward Jared Sullinger's left foot.

Here's what you should know.

 

1. Mr. Sullinger signed with the Raptors as a free agent this offseason. The procedure was largely preventative to alleviate a symptomatic stress reaction. Mr. Sullinger's status will be updated throughout the course of the season.

 

2. Dr. O'Malley is an associate attending orthopedic surgeon and the fellowship director of foot and ankle service at New York's Hospital for Special Surgery.

 

3. Dr. O'Malley has operated on several athletes and is a member of the Brooklyn Nets and the New York Knicks medical staffs.

 

4. He is considered an expert in total ankle replacement, arthroscopy of the ankle and post-traumatic reconstruction of the foot and ankle.
