Orthopedic Sports Medicine

The University of British Columbia officially began construction on the Chan Gunn Sports Medicine Pavilion which will soon house the Allan McGavin Sports Medicine Centre, The Ubyssey reports.

Here's what you need to know.

1. The pavilion and center will replace the former John Owen Pavilion. The pavilion was demolished in 2015.

2. Director of UBC's school of kinesiology Robert Boushel said the location is perfect for the center because of its proximity to the "hub of athletic activity."

3. The center is named after Chan Gunn, the president of the Institute for the Study and Treatment of Pain.

4. The University received funding from the Jack and Darlene Poole Foundation, and the Canadian government's Strategic Investment Fund.

5. The center and pavilion were originally slated to be constructed in two phases, but the university was able to secure funding to construct both in one phase.

6. Work is expected to be completed in September 2017.
