Neurosurgeon Dr. Jack Wilberger to evaluate Steelers' concussions on field: 5 key points

Neurosurgeon Jack Wilberger, MD, of Allegheny Health Network in Pittsburgh, will evaluate Pittsburgh Steelers' concussions on the field during home games, according to Trib Live.

Here are five key points:

 

1. Dr. Wilberger will be the team's independent neurotrauma consultant.

 

2. He will serve the team as part of the NFL's new concussion protocol, which strives to prevent chronic traumatic encephalopathy among the players.

 

3. Dr. Wilberger will evaluate concussions on the Steelers' sideline and will direct another Allegheny Health Network physician on the opposing team's sideline.

 

4. The NFL and NFL Players Association will pay Allegheny Health Network for the services.

 

5. University of Pittsburgh Medical Center physicians will continue to serve as the Steelers' team physicians.
