15 Orthopedic Surgeons Treating Sports Stars

Here are 15 orthopedic surgeons who are performing procedures for professional athletes. James Andrews, MD, founder of Andrews Institute for Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine in Gulf Breeze, Fla., performed elbow surgery on Red Sox pitcher Chris Carpenter to remove a bone spur in his throwing elbow.

Dr. Andrews
also performed ulnar collateral ligament repair on Atlanta Braves pitcher Arodys Vizcaino, who will spend the next year recovering form the procedure.

will also perform ulnar collateral ligament repair on Minnesota Twins relief pitcher Joel Zumaya, who tore his UCL during his first bull pin session with the Twins.

Team physician for the Oakland Athletics Douglas Freedberg, MD, performed knee surgery on A's third baseman Scott Sizemore, who is expected to miss the entire season during recovery.

San Diego Padres team physician Heinz Hoenecke, MD, performed knee surgery on Padres outfielder Carlos Quentin, who is expected to spend for weeks recovering before returning to play.

Kansas City Royals team physician Vincent Kay, MD, and Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic surgeon Clarence Shields, MD, performed knee surgery on Royals catcher Salvador Perez who injured his knee during warm ups for a preseason game.

Orthopedic surgeons Evan Lederman, MD, and William Raasch, MD, performed knee surgery on Milwaukee Brewers right fielder Corey Hart at Arrowhead Hospital in Glendale, Ariz.

Orthopedic surgeon Craig Morgan, MD, performed rotator cuff surgery on Baltimore Orioles pitcher Matt Hobgood, who began experiencing shoulder discomfort earlier this month.

Steven Raikin, MD, performed foot surgery on Philadelphia Flyers' James van Riemsdyk, who broke his foot during a game earlier this season.
