Steve Yoon, MD, injected platelet rich plasma and stem cells into the elbow of Los Angeles Angels Shohei Ohtani June 7, MLB.com reports.
Here's what you should know:
1. Mr. Ohtani departed his June 6 start after only four innings. He underwent an MRI revealing a grade 2 ulnar collateral ligament sprain.
2. In December 2017, he had a grade 1 UCL sprain in the same elbow, which was treated with a PRP injection. The Angels were confident the treatment would be effective.
3. A physician will reevaulate Mr. Ohtani in three weeks. The team is hopeful Tommy John surgery can be avoided. However, ESPN's Pedro Gomez reported Mr. Ohtani will likely need Tommy John. Angels GM Billy Eppler said to The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal that nothing about the diagnosis has changed and that Tommy John surgery is not on the table.
4. Dr. Yoon is an orthopedic physician and the director of regenerative medicine at Los Angeles-based Cedars-Sinai Kerlan Jobe Institute.
