Neal ElAttrache, MD, will repair the torn ulnar collateral ligament of Boston Red Sox pitcher Jay Groome, the Boston Globe reports.

Here's what you should know.

1. Mr. Groome, 19, felt forearm soreness towards the end of spring training. An MRI showed no structural damage at the time.

2. However, as Mr. Groome began ramping up his throwing program in April, he felt more discomfort. The team sent him for another MRI where the tear was discovered. He's expected to return sometime in 2019.

3. Dr. ElAttrache is an orthopedic surgeon at Cedars-Sinai Kerlan-Jobe Institute in Los Angeles. He is chairman of the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Foundation board and program director for the Kerlan-Jobe fellowship.

4. He is the head team physician for the Los Angeles Dodgers and Los Angeles Rams. He is also an orthopedic consultant to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, Los Angeles Clippers, Los Angeles Kings, Anaheim Ducks and the PGA Tour.
