'A fascinating read' — Dr. David Geier publishes book on injuries that changed sports medicine

Orthopedic Sports Medicine

David Geier, MD, published a book titled That's Gotta Hurt: The Injuries That Changed Sports Forever earlier this month to positive reviews.

Dr. Geier is an orthopedic surgeon focused on sports medicine and previously served as the director of sports medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. He is now the medical director of sports medicine at East Cooper Regional Medical Center in Mount Pleasant, S.C., and maintains a successful sports medicine blog.

"I highly recommend the great book by Dr. David Geier, related to Ann Geier, titled 'Thats Gotta Hurt,'" says Becker's Healthcare Publisher Scott Becker. "It's a great read discussing big sports injuries and their impact on the thinking on recovery, rehab, surgical treatment and more. It reviews the decisions on the time Michael Jordan took off to recuperate in his second season and the haggling over when to come back; the heart condition of Eddy Curry; the suddenly sad death of Hank Gathers; the story of Brandi Chastain's ACL and more. It also touches on youth football concussions and David Duersons suicide attributed to CTE. A fascinating read."

Dr. Geier previously published "The Year of the Healthy Athlete: 52 weekly tips to keep you injury free and performing at your best" and "Sports Medicine Simplified: A Glossary of Sports Injuries, Treatments, Prevention and Much More." He hosts a weekly sports medicine podcast, "The Dr. David Geier Show," addressing key sports medicine issues and injuries of the day.

Throughout his sports medicine fellowship and career, Dr. Geier has served as a physician for the Family Circle Cup women's professional tennis tournament, team physician for the Charleston Battery professional soccer team, physician for USA Rugby and worked with the medical staff for the St. Louis Cardinals.

Sports injuries at all levels are a passion for Dr. Geier. He has been the communications council chair for the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine and on the outreach committee for the STOP Sports Injuries campaign.
