Four insights on spine and neurosurgeon compensation:
1. A 2019 Neurosurgery Executives’ Resource Value and Education Society survey reported significant differences in compensation based on practice type. Neurosurgeons in private practice had a median compensation of $889,000, up from $822,000 in 2018. Hospital-employed neurosurgeons had a median compensation of $786,000, falling from $873,000.
2. The NERVES report broke down neurosurgeon starting salaries by subspecialty:
Vascular: $537,000
Spine: $531,000
Cranial/skull base: $525,000
Pediatrics: $486,000
3. At $796,000, spine surgeons were found to have the highest median compensation. Adult services neurosurgeons had median compensation of $755,000, compared to $648,000 for pediatric general services.
4. The median compensation for neurosurgeons in large groups — designated as 300-plus physicians — was $790,248, according to a recent American Medical Group Association report. Groups with 151 to 300 physicians had a median salary of $646,720 in, followed by $737,060 in groups with 50 to 100 physicians.
