Waiting for Scoliosis Surgery Increases Risk of Complications, Additional Surgeries

A study published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal shows that when children wait too long for scoliosis correction surgery, they are at higher risk for complication and may need additional surgeries, according to a CBC news report.

The researchers examined 88 adolescent scoliosis patients who waited longer than six months for surgical intervention. Of these, approximately 15 percent needed additional surgery because of a worsening condition. The researchers also followed 128 scoliosis patients who waited less than six months for surgery, and only 1.6 percent of these patients needed additional procedures.

The study’s author targeted three months as the maximum wait time for patients with adolescent scoliosis before surgical intervention to minimize the risk of complications and worsening the curvature.
