Here are three observations:
1. Dr. Robertson found Epstein-Barr virus and Kaposi’s sarcoma-associated herpesvirus are capable of infecting and replicating neurons.
2. This research demonstrated it is possible for gammaherpes viruses to infect neuron cells, not necessarily that viral infections cause neurological diseases.
3. Although not explicitly found yet, a causal link between viral infections and the development of neurologic diseases could help with treatment of multiple sclerosis or Alzheimer’s disease.
