Surgeons at UCI Health are among the first surgeons to use carbon fiber implants in spine surgery, according to an April 14 news release.
The first case using the technology at an academic health system was completed in September for a patient with thyroid cancer that spread to the upper spine. After the tumor was removed, Hao-Hua Wu, MD, and Hansen Bow, MD, PhD, performed a posterior reconstruction and stabilization of the cervical and thoracic spine.
Dr. Wu and Dr. Bow used a hybrid carbon fiber and titanium construct for the procedure. Carbon fiber implants have the advantage of being radiolucent to support imaging.
