The Spine Journal Honors Several Spine Surgeon Research Papers

North American Spine Society’s The Spine Journal has selected the recipients of the 2011 Outstanding Paper Awards and Editors’ Choice Awards, which were announced at the NASS annual meeting in Chicago.

The winners of Outstanding Paper awards include:

•    Zack Abbott, DO; Kavita Nair, PhD; Richard Allen, MS; Venu Akuthota, MD, for their paper titled “Utilization Characteristics of Spinal Interventions.”
•    John Street, MD, PhD; Brian Lenehan, MD; Christian DiPaola, MD; Michael Boyd, MD; Charles Fischer, MD; Brian Kwon, MD, PhD; Scott Paquette, MD; Yoga R. Rampersaud, MD; Marcel Dvorak, MD, for their paper titled “Morbidity and Mortality of Major Adult Spinal Surgery: A Prospective Cohort Analysis of 942 Consecutive Patients.”
•    Steven Leckie, MD; Bernard Bechara, MSc; Robert Hartman, MSc; Gwendolyn Sowa, MD, PhD; Barrett Woods, MD; Paulo Coelho, MSc; William Witt, MSc; Qing Dong, MSc; Brent Bowman; Kevin Bell, MSc; Nam Vo, PhD, Bing Wang, MD, PhD; James Kang, MD, for their paper titled “Injection of AAV2-BMP2 and AAV2-TIMP1 into the Nucleus Pulpous Slows the Course of Intervertebral Degeneration by MRI, Histological, Serum Biomechanical and Biomechanical Criteria.”
•    Salin Kim, RN, MN, PhD; Sorooush Mortaz, MD, PhD student; Peter Coyte, PhD; Raja Rampersaud, MD, for their paper titled “Cost-Utility of Lumbar Decompression With or Without Fusion for Patients With Sympotomatic Degenerative Lumbar Spondylolisthesis.”

The Editors’ Choice Award was given to Scott D. Daffner, MD; Henry J. Hymanson, BS; and Jeffrey C. Wang, MD, for their paper titled “Cost and Utilization of Conservative Management of Lumbar Disc Herniation Prior to Surgical Discectomy.”
