The most commonly performed lumbar spine procedures

Transforaminal lumbar interbody fusions/posterior lumbar interbody fusions have been the most commonly performed lumbar procedures in the U.S. since 2015, according to the 2025 American Spine Registry, a partnership between the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.

The inaugural report reviewed procedures performed between 2015 and 2023, collecting data on 230,159 lumbar spine procedures, 112,683 cervical spine procedures and patient-reported outcome measures, according to a Feb. 20 news release. 

Here is the percentage of types of lumbar spine procedures performed in the U.S. from 2015 to 2023: 

1. TLIF/PLIF: 32.3%

2. Laminectomy or posterior decompression and other decompressions: 29.6%

3. PLF: 28.7%

4. Discectomy: 22.2%

5. Foraminotomy: 21.9%

6. ALIF/LLIF: 17.2%

7. Corpectomy: 5.7%

8. Lumbar arthroplasty: 0.4%
