Surgeons remove spinal tumor while piano plays during 4-hour procedure

Spine surgeons in Italy removed a spinal tumor during a four-hour procedure while a grand piano was played to provide a therapeutic effect for the 10-year-old patient, according to Italian magazine Wanted in Rome.

Neurosurgeon Dr. Roberto Trignani led the procedure while molecular biologist and musician Emiliano Toso, PhD, played the piano in the OR.

Dr. Trignani noted changes in the patient’s brain activity when the music was interrupted.

The tumor was successfully removed Nov. 16 at Riuniti Hospital in Ancona.
