Study: Thoracic Spine to Pelvis Fusion Still Risky After Technology Advancement

Complex spine reconstruction that fuses the thoracic spine to the pelvis is a high-risk procedure despite recent advancement in surgical technology and perioperative techniques, according to a study published in Spine.

A retrospective study of two tertiary referral institutions included 103 consecutive patients who underwent fusion extending form the thoracic spine to the pelvis for degenerative conditions. There was a 4 percent mortality rate and the mean hospital stay was 12±7 days.

Approximately 55 percent of the patients were discharged to a rehabilitation facility and 12 percent experienced at least one major complication. Thirty-five percent made unplanned visits to the OR and 17 percent had documented new persistent neurological deficit that was still present at the final clinical visit.
