Study: Spinal Decompression Later in Case Order Linked to Higher Infection Rates

A recent study of whether surgical site infections are associated with case order in spine surgery concludes that decompressive procedures performed later in the day carry a higher risk for postoperative infection, according to a report in Spine.

There was no such trend for fusion procedures.

The study looked at a combined 6,666 decompression and fusion spine surgery cases between January 2005 and December 2009. The study’s authors then concluded the case order of each procedure, depending on the number of previous cases in the same room during the course of the day.

The results identify modifiable risk factors, including:

  • Contamination of the operating room;
  • Cross-contamination between healthcare providers during the course of the day;
  • The use of flash sterilization;
  • Mid-day shift changes.
