Study: Lumbar Interspinous Spacers Beneficial for Select Patients

Lumbar interspinous spacers could have a beneficial effect in a select group of patients with degenerative diseases of the lumbar spine, according to an article published in Spine.

Researchers conducted a clinical and biomechanical review of spine surgeries performed with lumbar interspinous spacers and found that the largest number of studies were done with the X-STOP device. The studies showed that overall the interspinous spacers had a beneficial effect on the kinesmatics of the degenerative spine.

The results of the studies also showed that the X-STOP may improve outcomes when compared with nonoperative treatment in patients more than 50 years old who show a radiologically confirmed lumbar canal stenosis and neurogenic claudication.
