Study: Lenke Classification Reduced Variation in Scoliosis Treatment Approaches

The introduction of the Lenke classification for surgical treatment of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis has led to a reduction in the variation of treatment approaches, according to a study published in Spine.

However, data suggests that 6-29 percent of the time, there are other aspects of clinical and radiographic deformity that may require deviation from the recommendations for better outcomes, according to the study’s authors.

The Lenke classification was introduced in 2001. Study authors studied data for 1,310 AIS patients who underwent surgical correction for the deformity, either following or not following the recommendations. There were 191 patients who did not follow the classification system. Before the Lenke system was introduced, there was a greater proportion (18 percent) who broke the guidelines than after (12 percent).
