Study: High Intensity Zones May Signal Painful Intervertebral Disc

High intensity zone may be a specific signal for the inflammatory reaction of painful intervertebral disc, according to a study published in Spine.

Researchers examined 26 consecutive patients with low back pain. The patients underwent MRI and discography. HIZ appeared in the involved intervertebral discs on T2-weighted MRI and lumbar discography was performed on each patient. All patients received posterior lumbar interbody fusion procedures.

The histologic study of the consecutive sagittal slices of the HIZ showed several proliferated small round cells and fibroblasts, according to the report.
