Researcher examined data from the Nationwide Inpatient Sample between 2002 and 2009. A total of 578,457 lumbar spine procedures were identified, which included patients undergoing lumbar decompression and lumbar fusion for degenerative etiologies.
The study also found that patients undergoing lumbar fusion were more likely to experience cardiac events than lumbar decompression patients. In the lumbar fusion group, the incidence of cardiac complications was found to be 9.3 per 1,000 surgical cases and in the lumbar decompression group, the rate of complications was found to be four per 1,000 cases.
