Stanford Medicine performs 1st spine surgery using Surgical Theater AR

Stanford (Calif.) Medicine has performed the first ever spine surgery using Surgical Theater’s augmented reality technology.

The AR spine surgery was done using Surgical Theater’s SyncAR Spine, which integrates Microsoft’s HoloLens headset, according to an Oct. 19 press release from Surgical Theater. 

The first procedure done using SyncAR was a tumor resection led by Atman Desai, MD, clinical professor of neurosurgery and director of neurosurgical spine oncology at Stanford. 

The AR system offers 3D visualization of tumors, allowing surgeons to more accurately place incisions and navigate. 

“In the future, surgeons will use augmented reality and mixed reality headsets for every procedure. This will revolutionize how surgeons plan and perform surgeries. I am proud to have our technology being used at Stanford Medicine for several years now, and I am thrilled for this groundbreaking achievement,” Alon Zuckerman, president of Surgical Theater, said in the release.
