Spine surgical hospital resists health system’s vaccine mandate

Dallas-based Baylor Scott & White Health mandated July 28 that all employees receive the COVID-19 vaccine by Oct. 1, but a joint venture surgical hospital part-owned by the health system will not have the same standards, according to a report from a local CBS affiliate.

Texas Spine & Joint Hospital in Tyler told CBS19 it would not mandate the vaccine because it’s a joint venture between the health system, physicians and United Surgical Partners International.

Baylor Scott & White sait it would work with joint venture partners and adjust its policy as needed. Jess Mowery, a spokesperson for Texas Spine & Joint Hospital, told CBS19 it aims to promote safety for patients and staff.

Health systems across the U.S. are now requiring staff to receive the COVID-19 vaccine unless granted an exemption. Becker’s compiled a list of more than 60 large health systems with vaccine mandates as of July 29. Most physician-owned entities, including ASCs, do not require employees to get the vaccine.

At the Becker's 23rd Annual Spine, Orthopedic and Pain Management-Driven ASC + The Future of Spine Conference, taking place June 11-13 in Chicago, spine surgeons, orthopedic leaders and ASC executives will come together to explore minimally invasive techniques, ASC growth strategies and innovations shaping the future of outpatient spine care.
