Spine Surgeons Perform UC Irvine’s First Robot-Assisted Spine Surgeries

Nitin Bhatia, MD, chief of orthopedic spine surgery and director of the spine center at the University of California, Irvine, and Samuel Bederman, MD, of the UC Irvine Spine Program, recently performed the first series of robot-assisted spine surgeries in Orange County, Calif., according to a hospital news release.

The hospital recently acquired the SpineAssist surgical robot from Mazor, which surgeons use to accurately place implants. The system is designed to reduce the rates of misplaced screws and neurological deficits during spine surgery.
