Ezriel Kornel, MD, a spinal neurosurgeon with more than 40 years of experience, has seen the advent of minimally invasive technologies.

“One of my greatest joys as a surgeon has been contributing to advancements in spine surgery, particularly in developing and expanding minimally invasive techniques,” he said. “My interest in this field began years ago with the introduction of endoscopes … The development of the tubular retractor system changed this perspective. It was initially designed to serve as a pathway for endoscopes. However, after trying it out, I realized it was more effective when paired with a high-quality microscope rather than an endoscope. The capabilities of a microscope far exceeded what an endoscope could achieve in this context.”

Dr. Kornel joined Carmel, N.Y.-based Somers Orthopaedic Surgery & Sports Medicine Group in September. He earned his medical degree from Rush University in Chicago, and he completed his residency at George Washington University in Washington, D.C.

During his career he developed and patented multiple instrumentation methods to reduce surgical trauma and bolster recovery times. His research interests focus on neurophysiology and neurosurgery.

Dr. Kornel is speaking at Becker’s 22nd Annual Spine, Orthopedic and Pain Management-Driven ASC + The Future of Spine Conference, set for June 19-21 at the Swissotel Chicago.
