Spine, orthopedic inpatient cases on the decline as outpatient cases rise

Spine procedures have seen some of the most rapid growth in the outpatient setting in the last five years, according to a March report from commercial real estate company JLL. 

Outpatient spine cases have increased just over 3% in the last five years, while inpatient spine cases have decreased 1%. 

Overall, outpatient volumes in the U.S. are anticipated to grow 10.6%, while inpatient volumes will increase just 0.9% over the next five years.

Orthopedic cases are also growing in the outpatient setting, seeing a nearly 2.5% growth in the last five years while inpatient cases have declined. 

Physical therapy cases have also grown in the outpatient setting by nearly 3%, but inpatient cases have also grown by over 3%.
