The September issue of The Spine Journal is devoted to the casualties of war and reveals facts about the psychological and physical effects of war.

Findings include the following:

•    Musculoskeletal pain and spine pain are by far the most common causes of evacuation from Iraq and Afghanistan.
•    With the loss of mission focus in Iraq from 2005 to 2006, combat casualties decreased but both spinal pain and psychiatric casualties dramatically increased.
•    60 percent of veterans seeking care for spine problems have serious continued psychological distress.

Physicians hope the issue will help fill the gap in knowledge and understanding about wartime issues so that clinicians can better care for veterans at home and abroad.
