The researchers examined the dual-attending surgeon approach, a live multidisciplinary screening conference and intraoperative protocol to manage coagulopathy. There were 40 patients managed without the three-pronged approach and 124 consecutive patients managed with the three-pronged approach.
Researchers found complication rates significantly lower in the group managed with the three-pronged approach, including lower rates of deep vein thrombosis/pulmonary embolism and lower rates of postoperative neurological complications.
“These data suggests that a team approach consisting of a dual-attending surgeon approach in the operating room, a live preoperative screening conference and an intraoperative protocol for managing coagulopathy will significantly reduce perioperative complication rates and enhance patient safety in patients undergoing complex spinal reconstruction for adult spinal deformity,” concluded the study authors.
