Spinal cord injury increases risk of mental health disorders, Michigan Medicine finds

Research published in Mayo Clinic Proceedings found that adults with spinal cord injury are at a higher risk of developing mental health disorders, Science Daily reports.

Four things to know:

1. Researchers from Ann Arbor-based Michigan Medicine studied insurance claims data for adults enrolled in a health insurance plan for at least three years, and their mental health disorder diagnosis. 

2. Data from adults with spinal cord injury was compared with data from individuals without the condition.

3. Adults with spinal cord injury were found to have a higher incidence of anxiety disorders, depressive disorders and psychological multimorbidity.

4. Researchers found that patients with a spinal cord injury were also at a higher risk of developing other chronic diseases, including cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases, diabetes, cancer and arthritis.
