South Dakota spine surgeon wins AAOS’ Humanitarian of the Year Award

The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons recognized Steven Meyer, MD, with its Humanitarian of the Year Award on March 30, the Sioux City Journal reports.

Three things to know:

1. Dr. Meyer is an orthopedic spine surgeon with Dakota Dunes, S.D.-based The Center for Neurosciences, Orthopaedics & Spine.

2. AAOS presented Dr. Meyer with the award for his 20-plus years of experience providing healthcare and human services to underserved people in Tanzania, where he has completed 50 medical missions.

3. In 1996, Dr. Meyer and his wife co-founded nonprofit organization Siouxland Tanzania Educational Medical Ministries, which has completed more than 1,000 general and orthopedic surgeries in the country.
