Here are five things to know about the center:

1. The spine center is 9,000 square feet, and hospital officials feel there will be enough demand to accommodate a center focused on spine care.

2. The center’s director is Alexios Carayannopoulos, MD, a former Navy physician who now specializes in spine care.

3. The spine center includes epidural injections, spinal cord stimulation, rhizotomy and intrathecal pump therapies. The center also includes physical and occupational therapies and referrals for chiropractic, massage and acupuncture.

4. There are eight examination rooms and an ambulatory procedure room at the center.

5. The clinic is modeled after the program Rees Cosgrove, MD, and Dr. Carayannopoulos started at Lahey Hospital and Medical Center. Dr. Cosgrove eventually joined Lifespan and recruited Dr. Carayannopoulos to spearhead the clinic at Rhode Island Hospital.
