Regular brace wear helps prevent curve progression & surgery in scoliosis patients: 4 insights

Braces have been found to effectively halt or slow further progression of a spinal curve in adolescent scoliosis patients, according to a study in The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery.

Here are four insights:

 

1. For the study, adolescent scoliosis patients received a brace with embedded sensors to monitor use. Patients were then divided into two groups — 93 were told about the existence and purpose of the monitors, and 78 in the second group were not told about the purpose of the monitors.

 

2. Daily brace wear during the initial 180-day time period averaged 15 hours in the counseled group and 12.5 hours in the non-counseled group.

 

3. The spinal curve did not progress more than 6 degrees between the start of bracing and brace termination in 59 percent of patients in the counseled group, as compared to 36 percent of patients in the non-counseled group.

 

4. Patients who did not need surgery wore their brace 2.1 hours more per day on average.
