Pediatric spine leader Dr. Harry Shufflebarger dies

Spine surgeon Harry Shufflebarger, MD, died, West Palm beach, Fla.-based Paley Orthopedic & Spine Institute said in an Aug. 11 LinkedIn post.

Dr. Shufflebarger treated thousands of children, founded the Harms Study Group and was president of the Scoliosis Research Society, the practice said. He practiced in Miami for nearly 40 years and joined Paley Orthopedic & Spine Institute in 2020.

Arun Hariharan, MD, a spine surgeon with Paley Orthopedic & Spine Institute, said he remembers Dr. Shufflebarger as a teacher and mentor.

“Some of my favorite memories are the dinners we shared or being called up in the middle of an OR day to see patients he is referring to me,” Dr. Hariharan said in a LinkedIn post. “The conversation inevitably drifted to fishing and the stories and advice that came with it.”

Dr. Shufflebarger earned his medical degree and completed his residency at Emory University in Atlanta.
