Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. Michael Yaszemski Honored by Mayo Clinic

Michael Yaszemski, MD, was named John and Posy Krehbiel Professor of Orthopedics honoring Bernard F. Morrey, MD, emeritus chair of the orthopedics department at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., according to a Post Bulletin report.

Dr. Yaszemski has a professional interest in bone, cartilage and spinal cord regeneration, and has designed biodegradable scaffolds for use during surgery. For now, the scaffolds have only been implanted in laboratory animals, but they have fostered nerve and bone regeneration.

Dr. Yaszemski earned his medical degree at Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington, DC, and completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at Wilford Hall Medical Center at Lakeland Air Force Base in Texas. His additional training includes a research fellowship in orthopedic biomechanics as well as a spine fellowship at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Harvard University in Boston.
