Next-generation augmented reality spine surgery debuts in Florida

Timothy O’Connor, MD, director of minimally invasive and robotic spine surgery at Marcus Neuroscience Institute in Boca Raton, has become one of the first specialists in the world to conduct next-generation, augmented reality spine surgery with novel, advanced, high-resolution augmented reality technology.

Dr. O’Connor performed the procedure at Baptist Health Bethesda Hospital in Boynton Beach, Fla., according to a Feb. 5 news release. 

The new technology allows for surgeons to plan an operation while looking at the patient’s anatomy. It also offers up-to-date visualization and guidance trajectory.

The first procedure was performed by Dr. O’Connor on a 73-year-old female with severe neural compression with instability of the spine.

Dr. O’Connor initially debuted the new AR technology in cadaver studies alongside physicians from Marcus Neuroscience Institute, Weill Cornell Medical College, Tulane University, Boston University Medical Center and Kaiser Permanente. It was cleared by the FDA for use in open and minimally invasive spine surgeries in 2023.
