Valhalla, N.Y.-based Westchester Medical Center Health Network began using a radiation-free navigation and imaging technology for pediatric and adult spine surgeries.
The 7D FLASH Navigation System with MRVision allows surgeons to plan and perform procedures without preoperative CT scans or intraoperative radiation exposure. The technology uses BoneMRI software to generate a CT-like image from an MRI scan, according to a Sept. 14 news release.
Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital in Valhalla is the first pediatric hospital in the state and the only hospital in the Northeast to offer radiation-free spinal navigation. Valhalla-based Westchester Medical Center is the second adult hospital in New York to adopt the technology.
The technology is being used across orthopedics and neurosurgery. Westchester Medical Center said its spine care pathway also incorporates low-dose EOS full-body imaging for standing skeletal assessments.
A paper published in The Spine Journal projected intraoperative CT could result in one radiation-induced cancer for every 1,000 adolescent patients treated, according to the release.
