The Rochester (N.Y.) Spinal Association secured a $300,000 investment over three years from community partners as the organization marked its 35th anniversary, according to a Sept. 17 report by ABC affiliate WHAM-TV.
The financial boost came during Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Month. Organizers say approximately 50 to 60 new spinal cord injuries occur in the Rochester area each year.
The association provides resources for people living with spinal cord injuries, including peer support, social and recreational activities, housing, home care and transportation assistance.
“A lot of us have friends or family who have a loved one who’s experienced spinal cord injury,” Hilderbrant, executive director of Rochester Spinal Association, told WHAM-TV. “Some people are fortunate to have a great network of family. Some don’t, and that really shapes the experience for that person.”
