Olean (N.Y.) General Hospital, part of Buffalo, N.Y.-based Kaleida Health, has performed its first Intracept procedure, expanding minimally invasive options for chronic low back pain in the region.
The case was led by Joseph Staszel, MD, a pain management and physical medicine rehabilitation specialist, according to a Sept. 25 system news release.
The Intracept procedure, also known as basivertebral nerve ablation and whose trademark is owned by Relievant Medsystems, targets the basivertebral nerve to address vertebrogenic back pain linked to Modic changes and disc degeneration. Clinical studies have shown durable pain relief and improved function in patients who have not responded to conservative therapies, according to the release.
By offering the outpatient procedure locally, Olean General said it provides an alternative to lumbar fusion or other invasive surgeries for patients.
At the Becker’s 32nd Annual Meeting: The Business and Operations of ASCs, taking place October 29-31 in Chicago, ASC leaders, surgeons and healthcare executives will explore strategies to drive growth, enhance operational performance, navigate reimbursement challenges and prepare for the future of ambulatory surgery.
