The traditional spinal fusion procedures risk damaging nerves in the abdomen, including those that control sexual function and fertility, especially in men. In some surgical approaches, as much as 40 percent of male patients experience fertility problems, according to the approach.
Physicians at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia are using a three-dimensional robotic operating system to perform surgeries that could avoid damaging the nerves. Using the robotic approach, urologists advance the surgical instrumentation and then a neurosurgeon endoscopically fuses the spine.
