Dr. Dunn, 44, is an associate professor of neurological surgery, neurology and pathology/immunology at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.
Aiming to ease the burden on hospitals in Los Angeles and New York City, the USNS Mercy and the USNS Comfort were deployed last week to treat patients not suffering from COVID-19.
Each ship features 12 operating rooms, 1,000 patient beds, 80 ICU beds and room for 1,200 medical staff.
